Tom - my condolences. I (likely) had a herniated disc about a decade ago. My symptoms were identical to yours. I didn't get an MRI (being Canada and all), but ended up going to a good physiotherapist that specializes in spine stuff.
Key things I learned during recovery: if it hurts in a position, find a better position; alternate positions; walk (shuffle?); sit; lay down.. My fav rest positions were on the floor, on my back with knees raised. My other was on the floor on my stomach. Physio assessed that my disc/nerve problem was likely due to my slouching and poor posture. So the "on the floor on my stomach" position evolved to a sloppy-pushup-on-elbows for 1-2 mins at a time (as directed by physiotherapist) to help let the squished-bulging disc slip back in. You don't want to hear this, but after 3-4 weeks of pain, my goal became "be comfortable" (not pain free) within 4 months. I was able to appear to walk normal after 4 months of onset. reply direct to me if you want to chat further. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
