The second season of "Mad Men" made its UK debut last night on the
digital channel BBC4, with all of the hype the series has received
over here--and UK viewers, like most U.S. viewers, responded with a
yawn. Among the "multichannel" shows that beat it in its 10 p.m.
counterprogramming to BBC1 and ITV's flagship newscasts: ITV3's
"Ladies of Letters," a sitcom starring Maureen Lipman in a role
originated on BBC Radio 4 by Patricia "Hyacinth Bouquet" Routledge
(and greeted by some as the return of shows featuring characters out
of the 18-34 demo, even if on a digital channel), a rerun of the movie
"Red Dragon" on ITV2 and sister BBC3's repurpose of the "EastEnders"
episode that aired on The One earlier in the evening:

Of course, the Beeb had to have lower expectations for ratings
compared to being on The One or even BBC2, with the series being on
their "cultural" channel (and I'm sure the highbrow don't define
"culture" as an American drama series about advertising in the 60s),
but I do think they expected more than 242,000 homes to check it out,
especially when a few more homes than that watched the series premiere
last year.
