KLSX, the CBS-owned FM talk station in LA that has been struggling
ever since Howard Stern left for Sirius, is dropping the talk format
as of 5 p.m. PT today to move AMP FM, a teen-targeted CHR format with
a huge online component, from the HD2 frequency of CBS' "Jack FM" KCBS-
FM onto KLSX's signal--Adam Carolla and Tom Leykis are out the door
and are also ending their syndication runs, along with middayers
Frosty, Heidi and Frank and Danny Bonaduce (Bonaduce doing his show by
ISDN from Philadelphia, where he's morning man at CBS' "classic
alternative" WYSP).

The fun thing is that everyone's being allowed to do a last show
today, something that doesn't happen too often in today's radio
climate. Already yesterday Carolla was complaining that the only
thing left on radio is "ranchera music and Top 40" (although he also
kissed CBS' ass by saying that he was not criticizing them, just the
climate provided by the allegedly-personality-radio-hostile "personal
people meters" now used by Arbitron in the major markets). It will be
interesting to see how much CBS-basing is going to be done before 5
p.m. PT this afternoon--and it's easy to find out, since AOL and now
Yahoo!'s LAUNCHcast players (powered by CBS) make KLSX easy to pick up
without having to go to the station's web site. (The players are at
every other CBS radio web site, as well.)

Meanwhile, those who care about that sort of thing will note that
Clear Channel's Top 40 monster KIIS ("Kiss FM"), radio home of
Seacrest, has its first major competition in LA in years and years
(although some would consider urban station Power 106 a competitor),
so a jimdandy of a Top 40 radio war could be setting up. Meanwhile,
the last remnant of CBS' attempt to ride out Stern's departure with
the "Free FM" brand of talk radio is gone.
