As a byproduct of the furor over the monkey cartoon (and perhaps something on the back burner that the cartoon brought up front), Sharpton plans to put pressure on the FCC to take away the waivers that allow News Corp. to own the NY Post (and for that matter, the WSJ, technically an NY paper) and also own Fox affil WNYW and MyTV affil WWOR:
http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/02/25/2009-02-25_al_sharpton_takes_aim_at_rupert_murdochs.html In the late 80s, Murdoch sold the Post (and the Boston Herald) so he could hang on to WNYW and WFXT in Boston (after attacking Teddy Kennedy frequently in his papers for allegedly wanting to block the waivers)--he regained the Post a few years later and got the waiver on grounds of a failing newspaper, even if the last time the Post turned a profit Dorothy Schiff was still running it with left-of-center editorials, no lurid headlines and no Page Six. He got the WWOR waiver when News Corp. acquired the Chris-Craft/United stations (the core affils of now-defunct UPN) at the beginning of this decade. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
