Last week the public broadcaster (that takes advertising on its
television networks) responded to falling ad revenues by cancelling
two domestic series (one of which, the long-running "Fashion File,"
aired for many years on E! and sister channel Style Network here)--the
federal "heritage minister" criticized the network for "paying too
much" for the long-running U.S. game shows, which moved to the CBC
this past fall after many years on the private rival CTV:

"Wheel of Fortune" airs weekday afternoons at 5:30 p.m. and
"Jeopardy!" weeknights at 7:30 p.m. local time--if after 6 p.m. is
broadly considered as "prime time," it is the only U.S. show on the
CBC schedule--prime time from 8 to 10 is either home-grown shows or
shows from the UK, with the "National" newscast at 10 p.m. and George
I-Can't-Spell-His-Name's talk show "The Hour" at 11 p.m. The only
other U.S. shows on the weekday schedule are Martha Stewart and
"Simpsons" reruns (and the UK soap "Coronation Street" airs weeknights
at 7 p.m.). Even the heavily-inserted-with-CanCon version of "Sesame
Street" is off the air on the CBC now. Methinks the minister
protesteth too much.
