I am a hard core SS fan, so I guess my response won't help you very much, but I do love this show. I think the shows continue to vary between vulgar and innovative (well, I think the vulgar ones are innovative too, but I think I know what you mean). I seem to recall reading an article that said that half of the shows are written by one producer, and the other half written by another (maybe Silverman herself?) and that accounts for the difference you are talking about.
