I loved the British version, and liked the US version (the characters
are stuck in the 1970s (1973), not 1980s (which may be less hellish
than the 80s).

In the context of the show they were clearly implying that Malia
(Obama's oldest daughter) was President (in an earlier episode Sam is
shown reacting with surprise and relief hearing from a voice from 2009
that Barak Obama had won the election that was still being contested
when Sam had his "injury").

A number of responses to the Finale have commented on this
constitutional problem. It does seem like a careless mistake (why not
just set it in the end of 2036?) but it is not a fatal one. As has
been noted, there are a couple of easy fixes - a constitutional
amendment, the Gerald Ford solution, or, a variant, in which the VP
elected in 2032 resigns or dies sometime in 2033, after Malia turns
35, and she is then appointed VP, and then becomes President after the
death or removal from office of the president elected in 2032.

I see this is not a popular show on this list, so I guess I won't get
an answer to this question - but what I was left wondering was whether
the shot of the white shoe was intended as an injection of ambiguity
into the end of the series, a la the UK version, or just a cute call
back? I would like the show better if it were the former, although if
that was their intent it was not nearly effective enough.
