The bottom line is that if Boyle had been (much) better looking, she probably could have had a shot at a career in musical theater. Maybe she still can -- if they fix her up. There are some parts for older women. I doubt that many young, good-looking singers are great performers (without a lot of experience and training).

She doesn't have a visual focus, her body is stiff, and she makes arbitrary gestures. I suspect that a lot of the power of her performance derives from the audiences' projections onto it.
