Jane Tranter was in charge of "fiction" programming for all four BBC domestic entertainment channels and had authority over both original production and foreign acquisitions, along with the Beeb's theatrical film division--she's now in LA running production for for-profit division BBC Worldwide America (the "Dancing With the Stars" people) and the Beeb has decided to decentralize scripted programming, letting the drama, comedy, longform, acquired and theatrical divisions run on their own:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/apr/27/bbc-jane-tranter-not-replacing Despite building up a long and distinguished programming lineup ("Life on Mars," "Extras," the "Doctor Who" revival and "Torchwood," among many others), many felt that Tranter had too much power and influence and that the programming was too London-centric (although "Doctor Who," "Torchwood" and "Life on Mars" were produced or co-produced by the Beeb's Wales unit). Interesting that the Beeb now follows the U.S. route of including comedy with dramas as scripted programming--traditionally in Europe, comedy is grouped in "light entertainment" divisions with variety, game and some reality shows. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
