As I said a few weeks ago when Jason was doing a "nielsen sucks" rant
(as if Nielsen conspires with the networks to make sure that SF/
fantasy shows and other cult shows don't do as well in the ratings as
reality competition shows and procedurals), the cable and satellite
companies can pick up the data on their subscriber viewing habits from
the current generation of boxes (including exact counts of VOD
requests--and eventually the broadcast networks are going to have
completely embrace VOD the way cable channels, in particular the
premium channels, have), TiVo wants to sell its subscriber data and
Hulu and the other online video providers should readily know how many
streams their material is getting. Now, there is the problem of
possible privacy matters (which I overstated in response to Jason),
but in the future Nielsen will not be the only gauge of popularity.
DVRs and online downloads will have to continue to increase in
popularity, though.
