I think Ferguson managed a decent attempt last year at threading this difficult needle. But YMMV.

There was something clueless at the beginning when he was booked. He was either going to drop his character and do Bob Hope-type jokes or stay in character and challenge the administration's most prominent politicians to their faces. He chose the latter. From here on out, the comedian is either going to be chosen to be inoffensive or will try to be edgy and fail because only Colbert can get away with Colbert's act.
