I think the issue is that...well, it's the "Tonight" Show. The set is
expected to look a certain way, have a certain feel, etc. regardless
of who's hosting it at the time.

The only other possible comparison is "Late Night", but even that's
not a fair comparison. "Tonight" has been around almost as long as
commercial television, whereas "Late Night" is only in its third
decade (and 2X fewer hosts). "Late Night" can get away with more
drastic (and more frequent) set redesigns because of the supposed LACK
of tradition, and even then, things are pretty constant - Letterman
only made gradual tweaks to his set over his 10 or so years on NBC,
and Conan only had the one major redesign, which was almost intended
to signal NBC's confidence in the show and acknowledge Conan's
maturity as a host.

Someone else registered surprise at the fact that Conan is retaining
the traditional "desk on Stage Right, band on Stage Left" setup from
Leno & Carson's sets, but really, he had to - Letterman's set on "Late
Show" is just an exploded version of his "Late Night" set...which
means he retained the 'desk at stage left' configuration. Conan HAS
to go right to differentiate.

Knowing Conan, I'm sure he and his staff will find ways to tweak the
set once they're comfortable. In the meantime, remember this: it took
Leno 5 years and a trip to Studio 8H to get his set just right.
