My .02 of pop psychology is that Dave wants things a certain way on his show, gets very comfortable, and likes the familiar. The examples that "prove" this for me are that the original CBS set was, while not identical to the last NBC set, it was its first cousin -- and even then, he's never extensively remodeled the set since Kathleen Ankers died, partially as a tribute to her and partially since it's what he's used to. My theory on the running across the stage is that he entered from upstage left center on "Late Night," so that's where he's gonna come out for "Late Show." It's all about what's familiar.
