It's interesting you should say that - I was wracking my brain earlier trying to figure out when, back in the 'glory days' of the network, the logo was actually presented as an orange 'splat'. I remember that the logotype was always grafted onto a 2- or 3-dimensional image that related to the show being promoted; a promo for, say, the game show "Finders Keepers" might have been tagged with the logotype in white against an orange house. I only ever remember the splat being used in connection with "You Can't Do That on Television"...for obvious reasons.
