Either way, I have the following observations about Apple's OS technology. In the late 1980's when at university I spent many hours, developing my skills on unix machines - specifically ones running BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution). During the mid-1990's BSD developed various branches (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD). One of the major ones, FreeBSD, had a founder named Jordan Hubbard. This guy was passionate about BSD in general. Since the late 1980's I have always used some sort of BSD (mostly FreeBSD) on my server at home. In ~2001 Jordan Hubbard left the FreeBSD foundation to join Apple. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jordan_Hubbard Around that same time, 2001, Apple re-engineered the core of MacOS to essentially be BSD or largely based on BSD-like systems. Fast foward to August 2009 at my house when my 10-year old asks me to "jailbreak" his iPod Touch. Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jailbreak_(iPhone_OS) While I am going through the jailbreak process I see the ipod touch rebooting and showing essentially booting a BSD-like OS - wow. My conclusion is that my wondering thoughts in 1989 of "would unix or BSD hit it big sometime?" have come true. The freakin' iPhone runs a branch of BSD (ok, more accurately "Darwin"). So, you may ask, why BSD and not Linux? You may recall that Linux was touted by journalists and industry people as the great free Microsoft killer? Well in my opinion, the difference is the licensing -- BSD licenses say it is ok to make proprietary products -- Linux not so much. Yes, it all comes down to legal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bsd_license#Proprietary_software_licenses_compatibility [/end geek rambling] --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
