After reviewing the episode in question, I thought Norm's first segment was funny in that cringe-worthy way. The second segment fell flat on its butt. And his interrupting Thomas Haden Church was rude.
>From the few professional comedians I've talked to, they've almost all talked about the temptation which exists, when one is genuinely bombing, to see just how far down the rabbit hole you can go. Norm showed the world the depths of comedy (or lack thereof). Last time I saw this attempted must have been 10 years ago or so when Dennis Miller went off the rails during one of his rants on the HBO show. He misspoke and the word "torcano" came out of his mouth, and he just couldn't recover. And the laughter he garnered by milking his failure quickly evaporated and he was left with a bewildered audience. Jay Leno was the guest that night. Miller just kept pushing and pushing until he finally walked off the stage and hugged Jay Leno who was waiting in the wings. I can't think of another line of work where such temptation exists... to see how massively you can fail. Then again, Andy Kaufman never worked as a middle school teacher... I'd have paid good money to see that. -- Kevin M.
