This is pretty much what happened to Michael Richards.

I love or hate Norm as much as many do. I generally like his persona,
and at times he can be laugh out loud funny; but he is a high risk
act, and he can also be extremely unfunny. He did not really score on
Conan the other night, but I was fascinated watching how stubbornly he
stayed with. I was rooting for it to get funny, and if it had gotten
funny it would have been really funny. But it didn't get funny. I
still prefer what happened to 5 minutes on how he spent his summer, or
the difference between NY and LA, or the heartache of trying to get a
new pool put into his house.

It was also interesting to watch Conan deal with him, since so much of
Conan's humor involves pushing his premise, and even his payoff, way
past the expected limit. I thought he kind of had the attitude of
"Really?  Even I wouldn't take it that far."
