They had no choice to stage Headlines that way, in order so Leno can
keep the ability to make instant editorial decisions on the bit the
way Carson did on all of the desk bits (including Carnac).  Sure, they
could've put the clippings through frame store and had them on the
video screen, but Jay would've been holding a cue sheet and there
might've been too much "let's go to number 14, Liz" calls to Liz
Plonka in the booth.
