This is a great microcosm for society. Despite being inefficient, unreliable, and unverifiable, Nielsen continues to be the dominating force in media ratings, to the tune of over $1 billion annually. They don't factor in new media (the internet), they don't accurately track the primary age demographic (college kids), but they continue to be used to gauge ratings.
