Where did you hear actual debate between people who disagree being
considered uncivil? Maybe I missed the link to that and if so I
apologize.

Oprah will be Oprah, and Palin will be Palin. They will be civil,
because it is in both of their interests to be, they will not engage
in real debate because, well, she is Oprah, and she is Palin. Unless I
happened to be kidnapped by the Taliban and subjected to the ultimate
torture of having my eyelids taped open and chained to a chair in
front of a television, I will not be watching them be themselves. But
I don't think it is a lack of character on the part of either one of
them to participate in this (or, perhaps a better way of putting this,
it is no more a lack of character for these two women, who presumably
disagree about a lot of things, to participate in this than it is for
any of the other guests who appear on her show). I think it would be a
lack of character if Oprah, who is willing to engage in schlock-fest
with just about anyone, somehow drew the line at schloking it up with
Palin just because she disagreed with her. I don't think Palin will be
appearing on, say, the Rachel Maddow Show (though if she does you can
bet I will be there for that one), which probably is a sign of a lack
of character, but that is something else.
