It's no secret that Ailes wants a nightly broadcast newscast and has
supposedly promised Shep Smith that he'll anchor it if it ever comes
to fruition--and that it might've happened at 11 p.m. if Fox had
gotten Leno, which, of course, they didn't. Instead Ailes, who has
jurisdiction over the owned stations, has instead pushed for local
news in the dinner hour (perhaps not to compete with Shep's 7 p.m.
"Fox Report" on FNC). Most of the owned stations seem to be falling
in line, WFLD in Chicago being a major exception, perhaps because they
don't want to break up that 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. "Simpsons" airing or
move it over to their WPWR, like they moved "Seinfeld" recently.
And it should be pointed out that with the possible exception of "Fox
News Sunday" (which I believe started before Ailes came over to Fox),
Ailes' broadcast track record with Fox News has been abysmal--that
magazine show with O'Reilly that was barely on the air, "Geraldo at
Large," "The Morning Show with Mike and Juliet." That (along with the
fact that the owned stations' news shops don't seem to be playing
along with the Obama-basing of FNC) would seem to indicate that what
works on cable doesn't necessarily work on broadcast.
