Well, USA has scheduled those programs at 10 before (bumping Burn Notice this
past summer up to 9pm to give Royal Pains a good lead-in). The main difference
is shifting Psych and White Collar out of Friday and into more competitive
nights.

What might really signal a going for blood strategy is if, when those shows go
to hiatus, they are rotated with new episodes of USA's other original series
(Royal Pains and In Plain Sight are the only ones that come to mind). USA
doesn't have enough shows yet to have a full year with at least one night of
new, original episodes, but it might be the only basic cable network that could
come close to Leno's 40-some weeks a year. FX and TNT are losing or just lost
some original shows, so they are a distant second and third here.

For what it's worth, Sons of Anarchy should have a banner night this Tuesday,
with their second season finale on FX. Leno may have dodged a bullet, as the
show beat Leno and The Forgotten earlier this year.

TV by the Numbers is reporting (see below) that starting in January it
will be scheduling three scripted programs (White Collar, Burn Notice
and Psych) at the 10:00 hour, in an apparent belief that it can
compete directly with NBC. I think USA and NBC are part of the same
family. If so, this is either some kind of brutal "every man for
himself" Darwinian philosophy at the company, or perhaps the glimmer
of an exit strategy for NBC; if USA can show that some of these
programs have promise at 10:00 against first run network programming,
we may see a couple of them moved over to NBC at 10:00 by the February
sweeps (I have been arguing for a while now that NBC should cut Leno
back to three nights per week). Maybe Leno can do his other 2 nights a
week on USA?

The latest info from USA Network paints an interesting schedule where
USA Network apparently looks to compete with The Jay Leno Show with
scripted programming as often as possible by having White Collar,
Burn Notice and Psych all air at 10pm on different nights, with White
Collar on Tuesdays (beginning January 19), Psych on Wednesdays
(beginning January 27) and Burn Notice on Thursdays (beginning January
21).
