I dunno. As someone old enough to remember Chet Huntley's exit, as well as Walter Cronkite's and a few others, these anchors-away tributes have gotten a little out of hand, IMHO. The last night of "The Huntley-Brinkley Report" was a terse affair with Huntley offering a closing commentary and him and David Brinkley saying good night to each other for the last time. When Huntley died, I understand that "NBC Nightly News" devoted about 10 minutes of the broadcast to him (I didn't actually see it, but maybe I'll borrow the tape from Vanderbilt someday). Huntley's obit didn't take up the entire broadcast, the way Frank Reynolds' did on "ABC World News Tonight." But when I thought ABC had reached the limit by devoting an entire newscast to Reynolds, then came the death of Peter Jennings, which not only took up the entire ABC newscast that night but was fodder for a week of tributes that seemed to go on forever. When it was Cronkite's time to say farewell in 1981, he did it simply and gracefully, as did John Chancellor the following year. Nothing against Charles Gibson, but I wish he'd been just as succinct. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
