A good piece summarising the position pretty accurately I'd have said (from
this side of the pond anyway).

But when push comes to shove, X-Factor and Pop Idol are essentially the same
show. I'm not sure if there's a territory anywhere airing them both. In the
UK X-Factor replaced Idol. And I'm not sure that running two shows a year
isn't overkill. Even Britain's Got Talent is essentially used as "event"
programming running over a relatively short period of time.

Fox has been shrewd enough (and I believe were forced to contractually) to
not overkill Idol by running it twice a year. This makes it more of an event
when January come around and the new series begins. Having X-Factor in the
fall and then Idol a few weeks later might damage Idol even more -
especially if it were now Cowell-less.

The other issue is that a fall X-Factor would mean that it's running
simultaneously with the UK version. While Len and Bruno manage the weekly
transatlantic flights for Strictly Come Dancing/Dancing With The Stars,
would Cowell want to do that? Especially if a feature of X-Factor is his
"mentoring" of some of the contestants.

The sensible thing would be for Idol to be "rested" for a while, and
X-Factor to take over. Fox doesn't *have* to run Idol into the ground before
it gets cancelled. Isn't the old entertainment maxim to "leave 'em wanting
more"?
