I might have a little different understanding of the thinking here as
described in the reports, or this may be what you mean in the above. USA ran
their new shows on Fridays originally for the reasons you give - the
networks put on lite competition because more folks are out and about, and
DVR catch-up, so they (rightly) judged they could make deep in-roads by
putting on high quality dramas that were as good or better than network
fare.

The move away from Friday to T & W represents a change from this strategy -
and is something of a relatively high risk-high reward for them. They are
putting their new dramas in the slots they used to run network reruns in,
and are basically attempting to compete against the big boys at 10:00
against the strongest the big boys have to offer (which will now include
Parenthood and SVU on NBC). This reward is that if they are successful they
will be seen as a 5th, first run, scripted entertainment network (perhaps in
some ways more successful at this than big sister NBC itself). The risk is
that they are leaving the sheltered environment in which these shows have
been successful, and may wind up hurting themselves on three different
nights.

So, USA is not moving away from Friday night because of the liabilities of
weekend activities and DVR archives - these are the factors that they have
been exploiting for their success. They are leaving this protected harbor to
try to compete with the big boys.
