The year I've seen more often than not is 1964, though I've seen as far back as 1961.

The problem here is that Leonard Goldenson came up with the strategy
for going for young demos back in the early *60s,* when Boomers fit
that demo (while Gabler makes it sound like the strategy was conceived
around the time of Carson's retirement).  In fact, the complaints
Boomers have made lately about being ignored by modern media could be
argued as the ultimate case of being hoisted by your own petard.

And besides, isn't Conan on the cusp between Boomers and Gen X?  It's
not like NBC hired Nick Cannon to host "The Tonight Show."
