Obama in his slot on the East coast kicked his ass (7M/2.0 on NBC). Leno was up against reruns on CBS most days this week, and did not beat any of them (ABC had occasional first runs). If there is one fact that sealed the doom of that show, it was probably that - he never did "catch them in the turns" - never did make up significant ground against the CBS reruns like he repeatedly claimed he would. I wish Oprah (who claimed to know so much about how television works) would have asked him about that. This probably also sealed the doom of Conan at the Tonight Show. If the JLS had been able to limp along for its full two years I think it is quite likely that Conan's ratings would have grown enough to make it harder for NBC to dump him for Leno. The lives of Leno, Conan and Dave (who will be impacted when Conan starts a three way race) were all turn upside down because twice as many Americans would rather watch a rerun of CSI:Miami than Jay Leno at 10:00. There may be a bump his last week, but there has been no growing interest in the JLS as it winds down. Aaron Barnhart wrote this week that the average ratings for Leno his last year at The Tonight Show were 5.2/1.4 - which I think will be very close to this core JLS average rating when all is done (not counting curiosity viewing first few weeks and reruns). Leno seems to have 5.2 Million Americans who really like him and want to see him do a show nightly. I will be surprised if he does not get between 4.5 and 5.2M viewers to The Tonight Show when he returns. If it is that lower number, he will be essentially be tied with Dave, if it is the higher number, he will be back to his old domination of Dave. I think he will lost a point or two in the demo from that 1.4. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
