You got nearly the same version that we did in the UK! I can't remember the last time the BAFTAs were actually broadcast live in the UK. They're nearly always on some kind of delay. This year they didn't start until 9pm on TV when in reality they began at around 7pm.
We had those same seven awards cut which I think is pretty appalling. Some of them are quite big awards. They seem to have been the awards in the 7-8pm hour. I think the reasons are to do with concern about swearing and the overall length of the show. But you're right that it's awful. We were just lucky this year that there weren't any really awful technical glitches. In 2008 the sound was awful, and in 2009 as well as clunky editing, there was the worst edited sequence for Terry Gilliam that I've ever seen for his induction into the academy. It was as though they used the first attempt at an edit with repeated sequences and so on. The real pointlessness is that all the relevant news sites, blogs, Facebook and Twitter were alive with the winners well before they'd been aired. In a 24 hour socially-connected world this makes putting a delay on awards ludicrous. Something I understand the US networks are learning for their award shows.
