I ended up writing a somewhat lengthy comment after viewing last
night's show. I decided I'd throw it up onto the website. If nothing
else, it allowed me to post some pictures and links, which you can
watch fly through the air.

I included a link to one of Snyder's CNBC shows, featuring the writer
Harlan Ellison. I was in the studio during that taping, and I had
never heard of Ellison before the show began. I do not have the second
part of that interview, nor have I found it online anywhere else. But
it contained a moment where Snyder bought a painting for Ellison that
moved Ellison to tears. And in that moment, where Harlan Ellison sat
there speechless, Snyder couldn't allow the raw emotion to pass. He
leaned forward, patted Ellison on the knee and said in his loud,
booming voice (and I'm paraphrasing), "It was worth every penny I
spent on that painting just to see you finally at a loss for words."
The two men filled the room with laughter.

I really do miss Tom Snyder. A genuine regret I have is that I did not
leave college and take a paying position when he moved from CNBC to
CBS. I would have benefitted from more years working for him.

If you happen to watch the Snyder clip I included in my post to the
website, you might also check out the multi-part interview he did with
Ayn Rand which comes up in the right-hand column of the YouTube
player. With the gentleness of a mother cradling her newborn, Snyder
was able to calmly and respectfully reveal Ayn Rand to be the amoral
monster that she was, allowing her words to do all the work. And he
did such a fantastic job that she thanked him for the experience.
