A couple of things: The Late Late Show has always made a point of being "different". Even after Snyder, they made a point of not giving the host a band or a sidekick, I think with the idea that they didn't want another hour that looked like the Late Show. Kilborn eventually starting involving his producers on camera; Ferguson seems to enjoy the challenge of making what he doesn't have work.
The Fry interview was lovely (I'm sure it helps that many crew members are still around from the Snyder days; maybe they're the ones who called Tom cranky.). Apparently, the pre-interview took place in London during the '80s. There are people who can converse for an hour without preparing, others who can do a good hour with preparation, some who will be good if the host is well-prepared (see Later with Bob Costas), and an awful lot of talk show guests who'd have all of us changing the channel within ten minutes. I don't think Ferguson wants to do the Later-like career retrospectives, so it's incumbent on the LLS people to choose the right guests if they want to do this again. -- TV or Not TV ....
