I will file a mild dissent.

I like the Oscars (watched this one late Tuesday night, already had 2 of the
major winners spoiled, but not that was more than I could have hoped for).
This year was not one of the better years. I like Martin and Baldwin - but
Baldwin seemed out of place and Martin would have been better alone. I was
alarmed that NPH seems to think we want to see non-ironic song and dance
openings at these things, and I agree that the day for interpretive dance
numbers is long past.

Still, I liked the show. I have relatives who died in the Holocaust and I
didn't mind the Nazi jokes. Warned by Roger I expected, but did not agree
with, the Bullock win. I can't believe Howell wanted more wallowing in the
first woman director stuff - Babs made my skin crawl - and given her set up
I thought her announcement of the winner was borderline cruel, as she slow
rolled it but left dangling the possibility the *first* she was about to
announce was black director (not hardly of course, but for him and his
family may have raised a few hopes). I liked Bigelow and thought she handled
the several awkwardnesses around her nicely. But her thanking of people in
uniform got a little absurd there at the end.

I though the Hughes recognition may have been the most genuine and sincere
Oscar memorial of all time - that could have happened at a local church or
school assembly.
