I thought I had read that they planned on expanding the theatrical release of The Hurt Locker, and this article: ( http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-03-09/-hurt-locker-oscars-may-double-box-office-sales-update1-.html) seems to confirm that, though the expansion was not as great as some analysts predicted, perhaps for the reasons you mention. Still, since it was such a low grossing movie (lowest ever to win an Oscar) it didnt take much to make a dramatic increase.
