As I understand the scoring system (as it stood a couple seasons ago,) they rank the judges scores and phone/text votes separately and the worst combined rank goes home, with the phone-in vote breaking any tie.
If I do my math correctly, the person with the lowest scores from the judges will return if they beat the second-lowest score in the vote (or the third-lowest score by at least two places, or the fourth-lowest by at least three places, and so on.) Given that information, Pamela (4th place in the scores) and Shannen (7th) must really have stunk up the viewer vote to wind up as the bottom two. (And Buzz and Kate must have a hell of a lot of people voting for them.) This is the first time that I can recall where the person booted first actually showed some real promise.
