I attended the very first funeral that Fred Phelps protested at.

It gets me angry every time I think about it. But at the time I was
not angry. None of us were angry. We were all shocked. The kind of
jaw dropping shocked where you just can't believe that you are
actually seeing what is before your eyes.

Nobody had ever done anything like this before. It was so shocking.
It was so obscene. It was beyond comprehension.

Unfortunately, it is now somewhat common to find Fred and his minions
protesting a funeral. The shock value is gone. But on that day,
nobody had ever seen anything like it.

I've followed Fred ever since. Hardly any news media will allow him
an audience anymore, with good reason. But every time is IS allowed
to appear on camera, it's obvious. Even he does not believe what he
preaches. The whole thing is just a series of stunts to give him
attention. His face lights up every time. It's his 15 minutes of
fame all over again.

I fully expect the supreme court to rule in favor of Freddy and allow
his obscene displays to continue in the name of freedom of speech.
But I always secretly hope for a stray bolt of lightening every time
he gets out those signs.
