Warren has been solid throughout her Daily Show appearances, highlighting how
little influence she has in her position.

Colbert does chat with guests beforehand (a likely exception being the repeat
of a Lou Dobbs interview Colbert opted to do the second time around as Esteban
Colbert). My understanding is that the consistent point he makes in these
conversations is that he's in character and that character is an idiot. My
sense of his interviews (and his improv background) is that he wouldn't want
things very scripted, but I can't dismiss the high percentage of good exit
lines. Perhaps he opts to cut the interview short when presented with these
opportunities?

Colbert nailed his interview with Elizabeth Warren (who, in a more perfect
union would be our next Supreme Court justice). He set her up by asking why we
need more consumer financial protections since we already have banking
regulation, finishing with "why do we need suspenders to go with the belt to
keep our pants up?", and she said, without missing a beat "we don't have any
pants", which Colbert used as the exit line. It was funny in context (though
not at all the best part of the interview) but it reminded me again of a
question I often have about Colbert.

The interviews are regularly the best part of his show (and I love the rest of
this show). One of things I like about it is that, even while staying in his
stupid conservative guy character, he makes it look like a genuine conversation
between intelligent people. Yet he also regularly manages to end these short
exchanges on a real exit line. The nature of most of the conversations, on both
sides, makes me think it is unscripted and unrehearsed, yet the high percentage
of too good to be true exit lines makes me think that somehow he has given many
of his guests a head's up about the last question he is going to ask so they
can wind it up. Do we know anything about this?
