I watched the Monday and Tuesday episodes. I've never watched "Idol," but the band sounds fine to me. I agree with your comments about the horn section and the keyboards.
It's interesting that, in a franchise noted for its continuity, The Tonight Show has now had four opening theme songs in thirteen months. Tuesday's episode with Chris Rock was VERY interesting. Chris wondered where the tall red-headed guy went, and then asked if the red-headed guy had taken Kevin with him. Chris said, "I can't believe you're back. You're a bad man, Jay Leno." Later, when Chris' second segment began, Jay asked Chris' opinion of the new band; Chris replied "I like the new light-skinned Kevin." That got a big laugh from everyone - except Rickey, who shook his head and said "That's cold, man." The beginning of Chris' appearance is here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/06/09/chris-rock-on-tonight-sho_n_605933.html The second guest of the night was Snooki of "Jersey Shore," who said so many dumb things that, at least twice during the segment, Chris turned to the audience with a wide-eyed expression and simply said "Wow."
