I suspect, actually, that it's big media vs. any medium of distribution they don't completely control (i.e., the internet in general, and especially any video site other than Hulu.)
Viacom had a suit against YouTube recently, claiming that they should be responsible for screening all of the uploaded videos (that's 29 hours of video per second, on the average, so at eight hours a day of nothing but watching video, five days a week, that's a staff of 438,400 required) for copyrighted content, which was thrown out on the grounds that Google was complying with the law as it stood. One of the things that came out during the discovery process was that Viacom's lawyers had sent takedown notices for large numbers of videos that had been uploaded by Viacom's marketers onto unofficial channels in efforts to create buzz. Also revealed at some point in the process: e-mails between Viacom executives arguing over who would get control of YouTube after they won the lawsuit. The hubris was impressive.
