There's a truism in sports: a new general manager brings in his own
coach. A new band leader should be able to bring in his own band. I
watched the Tonight Show for Kevin's last show and he introduced the
members of his outgoing band and mentioned with each member how long
they had been playing together. In some cases it went back 20 and 30
years. If Ricky Minor wants to bring in people he's comfortable with
or he wants to change the band's style, that's his privilege.

Regarding Evanier's piece, I agree with most of it. There are two
other factors I would add, one is that pop culture has been
fragmenting over the last decade or two and getting topical monologue
jokes which are funny to everybody and getting guests who are popular
to everybody has become much more difficult, and a real age gap
between host (specifically Dave and Jay) and guests has developed. As
a regular Dave watcher I think of his classic and reliable guests like
Bill Murray, Steve Martin, and Charles Grodin and see how old they all
are. Looking for younger stars turns up Spencer and Heidi and
celebuskanks.
