A Sherlockian would disagree with you. Much of the appeal of the stories is their setting. In fact, Sherlockians are fond of referring to the world of Sherlock Holmes as a place "where it's always 1895." Holmes couldn't function today. Current technology would solve most of those cases without the need for a Holmes. On the other hand there is a hideous animated series called Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.
