I lived a lot of years with four PBS stations (KCET, KOCE, KVCR, and KLCS). The bulk of what KCET does is also done on KOCE, but it doesn't have to be the case. Those two stations tend to run the same shows and specials, only at different times. At least up until a few years ago, KOCE ran some more localized programing that tied into the Orange County community colleges, but for the most part there wasn't much local programing. Pledge drives took place at the same time and featured the same specials (I remember the first year both stations STOPPED running Simon & Garfunkel's Concert in Central Park -- it was like an old friend had died).
I argued against KOCE being turned into a non-PBS station, and I'll also argue against KCET changing to something for-profit, but I'm OK with the two stations joining forces. They could be generating original content relevant to their respective communities, but they really don't, so a merger would seem the best solution to their financial situtations. On a side note, I just wish "This Old House" would post recent episodes online. One of the few things I miss about not having cable. -- Kevin M. (RPCV) -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
