I am going to have to side with the yahoo article here. The Facebook
campaign added some juice, but she was clearly jump-started by the Bullock
film (The Proposal, which came out in June of 2009). My wife made me see the
Bullock film, and I recall how the only thing that made it remotely bearable
was Betty White. It is really very bad - worse even than the typical example
of its kind, but it grossed almost 200 million on 2009 in the US alone (and
kicked "The Hangover" - which was an incredibly popular film with the
20-somethings) out of first place when it came out, and was popular on DVD.
Lots of young people (young girls, no doubt often dragging their young
boyfriends along) saw The Proposal, and probably had their first
introduction to BW there. That planted the seeds for her resurgence, which
were then hyper-fertilized by her Super Bowl commercial. The Facebook
campaign was simply the flowering of these events (supplemented by other
lower profile work she was doing on late night tv shows).
