I'm a tennis fan without cable. Here's what my experience was on
Monday night,

I was still at work when the match began, so I set my DVR to record
CBS from 4pm to 9pm. I finally had time to sit down and start watching
the match around 7pm. By the time I got through CBS' rain-curtailed
coverage, then found out that the coverage had switched to ESPN2, it
was around 9pm - and I had missed the end of the second set, all of
the third, and part of the fourth.

Fortunately, even though I don't have cable, I do have internet - and
the match was being carried both on espn.com and usopen.org. While
ESPN's coverage featured the CBS commentators (and I'm a big fan of
Enberg and McEnroe), ESPN's video stream was choppy and cloudy. It
would often stop for 10 to 15 seconds at a time or skip ahead 30
seconds; when it did work properly, the screen was so small and
pixelated that I couldn't see the ball clearly. So I gave up on
espn.com and switched over to usopen.org. I've watched matches there
before, and I've never had any problems with their stream - it always
plays very smoothly, with beautiful images, and in a window that takes
up most of my screen. Unfortunately, their announcers (whose names I
don't know) are terrible - especially the play-by-play guy, who sounds
like he's narrating a grade school science filmstrip.

And I'll give usopen.org credit for one more thing: Since they don't
run commercials between matches, they ran the entire trophy ceremony,
and did not cut away at the end.
