At first glance, it borrows (in some cases shamelessly) elements from
"Homicide: Life on the Street" and "NYPD Blue." There is a
Pembleton/Bayliss relationship between the veteran cop and the rookie
on his first day (reversed races, though) and "the board." The
camerawork is more in keeping with the modern Bochco style (and James
McDaniel is in the cast). I cannot judge from the pilot whether the
chemistry works, but it does have the requisite subtle/dark comedy
that I appreciate in a cop show (I liked the tension breaking line,
"This used to be a porn shop").
