Buster was called up on May 29 (the date sticks in my memory because it is my birthday). He was much anticipated (he had been signed to the largest bonus in history out of college) and had played at the end of last season, but he blew our socks off in July, hitting over .400 for the month and putting together a long hitting streak. If you were at AT&T in mid July you were probably there right in the middle of his white hot period, and we were all giddy. I was at several games in July too, and Buster was the prettiest girl in school, and we went like 18-6 or something like that for the month. But I think our mood then was still part optimism about the long term future, and part unrealistic fantasy about this season. August was actually a tough month - I think we were 6 or 7 games back of the Padres with about a week to go in August. The starting pitching in particular was disappointing. But then they turned it around, and from the end of August until, well, tonight, they were absurdly good. We did not really expect Buster Posey to hit .450 for the season, but we did expect 3 or 4 of our pitchers to be all-star level. By late August they started to perform at the level we knew they could, and we knew if that continued, we would be tough to beat. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
