I don't find Maron to be particularly funny as a comic (he is not > unfunny, he is just not the kind of guy who is consistently or naturally > funny, to me).
I remember Maron from his wilder early stand-up days, with some of the wildness of Sam Kinison and the social commentary of Bill Hicks. Then he did some time on Comedy Central, replacing Jon Stewart as host of Short Attention Span Theater (because clearly Stewart was never going to hit it big). I recall his Dr. Katz appearance, enjoyed all of these forms of Maron, but then he dropped off the face of the earth until he resurfaced on Air America, where he only wished he'd dropped off the face of the earth. All this is my way of saying I do like his comedy, and having the podcast listeners as an audience base has allowed him to do the sort of comedy he wants to do. It won't please everyone, but it works for me. As far as being hit or miss, I still check out every episode because his podcast has introduced new comics to me like Bill Burr (who has his own podcast that will probably be even less to most people's liking, but it grows on you after a while). -- Kevin M.
