We don't need to imagine that - important news breaks on weekends, and when he is on vacation, so we know what that feels like already. In what I imagine there would be nothing stopping Keith (and his alternate) from showing up and co-anchoring coverage of really big breaking news. I think a model like this has worked well at NewsHour, with the main anchor getting lots of nights off, and a strong stable of hosts able to do good work in their absence. I would not call myself a "fan" of Keith, but I have followed his career fairly closely over the years, recognize his brilliance, and appreciate his perspective. I think we need his voice in the public square. But, as Dan Patrick said on his radio show yesterday, Keith has a short attention span and gets bored easily. When that happens, he goes looking for trouble, and tends to get self-absorbed. I think, especially as he has gotten older, he also gets tired after being on the job for a while, and when he gets tired his judgment gets a little impaired. I would rather see him in a forum where he has time to reflect and write, and pick battles that are worthy of his intellect and vision and courage (and give a supportive editor or producer or friend a chance to talk him down from the occasional ledge in private). -- TV or Not TV ....
