Two appearances at the White House suggest Ms. Spaulding will make a living for
at least the near future.

With the discussion focused on Bieber and Spaulding, there's the matter of the
other nominees, at least two of which (Drake, Mumford and Sons, Florence and
the
Machine) have some combination of buzz and talent that could well have siphoned
enough votes from Bieber to allow Spaulding to get enough votes to win. Sounds
like that could well have happened in 1979.

The executive is confused on several points, the main one of which is
thinking that this "out of touch" bit started recently. Remember 1977
when the Starland Vocal Band beat out Boston for Best New Artist? Or
1979 when A Taste of Honey won over The Cars, Elvis Costello, and
Toto?

I bet Justin Bieber can get over any hurt feelings by crying himself
to sleep on a big pile of money while Esperanza Spalding keeps looking
for coffee shops and community centers willing to book a good jazz act
for a few nights.
