Fox won by suckering CNN into the argument about whether or not they had a liberal bias. CNN is better off letting Fox (and MSNBC now) argue about partisan ideologies, and trying to regain their reputation as a source of serious news. I say better off, but I don't know that I mean they will be better off ratings wise - as Wes notes, when there are big stories CNN benefits, but in the big in between straight news will probably lose out to the partisan soap operas. I wish there was some kind of business model in which CNN was the news arm of something like TBS. TBS could program to the lowest common denominator, and basically be in a ratings competition with Fox News for viewers essentially looking for entertainment, not information. CNN could then have a mandate to just break even, but not have to be a significant profit center, and focus on delivering the news.
