Official word came down the pipeline from Brad Wright via Joe Mallozzi
that there will be no movie to wrap up the loose ends of the most
recent Stargate franchise (there were hopes of a film uniting
characters from SG1, SGA, and SGU). I know die-hard SG1 fans who
didn't like the direction SGA took the franchise. And I was among
those who thought SGU would ultimately kill the franchise. However, I
have no interest in an "I told you so" moment. In actuality, I think
the concept had run its course and even a well-written spinoff would
not have saved it from doom (I felt the same way about "Star Trek:
Enterprise," that even if the show hadn't been written with mittens,
it was destined to grind TV Trek to a halt).

A few weeks back, they offered up a second season premiere for free on
iTunes (or maybe it was a second half of season two premiere -- SciFi
does that sort of thing). I thought I'd check in to see if I had
missed anything. I hadn't. Gone was the mythology, replaced by a space
soap opera with random gunplay (to give viewers the illusion they were
watching an action-adventure series). I'm choosing to treat SGU the
same way I treat the post-Sorkin seasons of "The West Wing": I'm going
to deny they ever existed and refuse to add them to my DVD collection.

The franchise is far too valuable to go away forever, but my guess it
that it will return in five or ten years the same way as Trek: with
new writers and producers reinventing it (for better or for worse, who
knows). For now, The DVDs of the first two series have been
repackaged/rereleased at a lower price with slimmer cases. Those who
missed it the first time around should check out the first few seasons
of SG1 and the first and fifth seasons of SGA.
