The issue I've always had with SGU is the same issue I had with Star Trek: Voyager - by virtue of putting the main cast out on the edges of space meant leaving much of the established franchise behind and charting new ground. Both series cheated in various ways - VOY had the eventual subspace link that allowed them to communicate in short bursts with Earth, SGU has the communication stones - but ultimately the writers had to come up with new villains, new peril, new reasons for the audience to be interested. And in both cases, they failed pretty miserably.
The funny thing is, one of the BEST episodes of SGU has come in this final batch of episodes. I'm referring to "Seizure", the episode that aired on 4/4. For me, the reason this episode was the best of the bunch to date was because suddenly, amazingly, we're back within canon! McKay! Woolsey! The Langarians*! An actual Stargate that people use to go places and not just stare at wistfully! And on top of all that, the first really creative use of the communication stones we've seen since they were introduced in SG1 season 8's "Citizen Joe". **Langara was Jonas Quinn's homeworld.* Of course, given all of the issues surrounding the MGM bankruptcy, I wasn't expecting much in the way of new Stargate, so this isn't really a surprise. Still, I wouldn't mind seeing another series based out of the SGC. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
